Canada Invests $2.26 Million to Expand Halal Beef Processing in Prince Edward Island

The Government of Canada is investing up to $2,256,786 to help Atlantic Beef Products Inc. modernize its Prince Edward Island facility and expand the production and packaging of halal-certified beef for Canadian retailers.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada announced the funding on January 9, 2026. The investment is being provided through the federal Kosher and Halal Investment Program, which supports federally regulated beef and veal processors adopting equipment and technologies for kosher and halal production.

What the Investment Will Fund

Atlantic Beef Products, based in Albany, P.E.I., plans to use the funding for a series of processing, food-safety and packaging improvements. According to the federal announcement, the project will include:

• advanced steam-vacuum systems designed to improve cleaning and safety;
• equipment upgrades intended to recover more usable meat and reduce food waste;
• new packaging technology for more retail-ready halal beef products; and
• an in-line X-ray analyzer to measure fat content more accurately and support product safety.

The company said the new equipment will allow it to produce halal products for retail and foodservice, package them at its own facility and have them certified to meet halal requirements.

Why the P.E.I. Facility Matters

Atlantic Beef Products is the only federally registered beef-processing plant east of Quebec. The facility processes as many as 750 cattle per week and employs approximately 180 people, while purchasing cattle from producers in Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

That position gives the project significance beyond one processing plant. Expanding halal production in P.E.I. could help increase the availability of Canadian-processed halal beef in Atlantic Canada, where consumers and food businesses often have fewer locally processed options than those in larger markets such as Ontario.

A Push for More Canadian Halal Products

The federal government presented the investment as part of a broader effort to strengthen Canadian food processing, respond to changing consumer demand and support domestic suppliers. It also connected the announcement to the federal Buy Canadian Policy, which is intended to give Canadian suppliers, materials and products greater priority in federal procurement.

For the halal market, the most important part of the project is the planned increase in products that are processed, packaged and prepared for retail sale within the same P.E.I. facility. This can support clearer supply-chain oversight and make it easier for retailers and foodservice buyers to source Canadian halal beef at a larger scale.

What This Could Mean for Halal Consumers

The announcement does not yet identify specific retail brands, package sizes, participating stores or the halal-certification body that will appear on finished products. Those details will matter once the expanded product line reaches the market.

Still, the investment points to growing institutional recognition of demand for halal food in Canada. Better packaging capacity, improved safety systems and increased meat yield could help Atlantic Beef Products supply a wider range of halal-certified beef products to Canadian retailers and foodservice businesses.
