In a show of solidarity and support, Mississauga Mayor Carolyn Parrish has made a $5,000 donation to HalalServe, a Muslim-run food bank serving over 100 families monthly. The announcement, made public this week, has sparked widespread conversation about faith-based food initiatives and community responsibility.
Founded to meet the dietary and cultural needs of Muslim families—especially newcomers, single parents, and seniors—HalalServe provides halal-certified food and essential support services in a respectful, inclusive environment. The Mayor’s contribution will help the organization continue its mission amid growing demand and rising living costs.
“This isn’t about politics—it’s about people,” said one local supporter in response to online debate. “HalalServe welcomes anyone in need, but they make sure the food is halal, which matters deeply to many families.”
While the donation was praised by many, including members of the interfaith community, it also drew criticism online. Some questioned why the donation wasn’t made anonymously, while others debated the role of religious food banks. However, supporters noted that faith-based food banks exist across many communities and often fill critical service gaps.
HalalServe confirmed that they welcome donations and volunteers from all backgrounds and are focused on compassion over controversy.
📍 HalalServe operates weekly at 2505 Dixie Road.
